You can find cheaper lifts. You get what you pay for. After many years, we finally built a garage big enough to store our canoe inside, over the cars. Understandably, we did NOT want the storage system to drop the canoe on the car unless we were lowering it to go for an adventure. The hardware in this lift is top notch. Good plating and mechanisms; hoist line that is not deteriorating every time we operate it. If you look at the bits in the lifts from the big-box stores you'll see the difference right away. Best of all, it fits our extra-high, extra-deep garage right out of the package! With this, one of us can load or unload the canoe alone. Very well designed and made. Worth every penny!

I've used several overhead hoist products for bicycles, ladders and the like - by comparison, the quality of the Harken hoist is in another league. High-quality rope, actual pullies (with bearings) all around, and a nice metal cam mechanism. By design it always lifts all 4 ropes equally, which is invaluable since you don't have to fight to keep the load level as it goes up. I'm using it to store a somewhat fragile carbon fiber canoe in my garage, and the quality and design of this hoist system gives me confidence that it's safe up there.

Took 2 people about 5-6 hours to install on 11' ceiling in garage. Working above your head is tough that high up. When we finally got it installed it worked nicely. Using it for X-Cargo rooftop carrier.

I would expect this to be cheaper considering the amount of work that it entails to put up. This was extremely difficult and took the better of two full days. Required additional materials. Of course the box wouldn't come with wood in it, but with all the extra cost and challenge to put up, I did not think this was worth the price. There's no way the rope and pulleys cost that much. You are paying for the instruction booklet. It does work if you install it correctly.

This product works great! It does take a few hours to install, but once installed it’s absolutely worth it. Don’t let the price scare you away, this lift system in phenomenal!

Take time to read the instructions over and over. If you build it like they suggest with cross beams and 5/16" bolts it can hold probably 10 times the weight of my roof box. It took several hours to install but its amazing!

I really wanted a lift for our cargo box that would pull it all the way to the ceiling given I have limited height available above my garage door. This lift fit the bill perfectly. Note I did not use the 2x6 mounting boards recommended in the instructions. I have access to the crawl space above my garage so could Mark the stud locations precisely to ensure secure mounting.

This is a well engineered and quality product once it is all set up and would recommend this however the installation is complex and will take time. You need to review instructions in detail and don’t rush.
