Well made, sturdy.

This odd looking thing is superbly designed to lift up the top of a Dutch oven from a campfire and let you check inside without spilling coals and ashes into your food from on top of the lid being lifted. Strong and sturdy, with leverage both for pulling up and for keeping the lid controlled and horizontal while lifted. Rarely have I ever found such an immensely practical tool for a reasonable investment. Can probably be passed down to your children along with your cast iron Dutch ovens. P.S. Before you lift your lid, give some thought to where you'll set it down while going back to stir your food or whatever. You need to keep it fairly level, so that ashes and coals don't spill, and you'll need a pretty clean surface, because the underside of the lid is going to go back on top of your food when you return the lid to your oven. Or else you need to be able to hold the lid lifter and lid level and straight in one hand while stirring with the other! P.P.S. Important: if you're hanging the oven by the bail/handle over the fire, you'll need to take the oven off the fire first and set it down so that you can let the bail fall to the side. The lid can't really be lifted off the top without slanting it sideways to extract it and thus spilling ashes all over the pan's contents if the bail is vertical.

This lid lifter worked very well for our needs on our camping trip to a hike-in site with four children. I am not an experienced camper. I camped every summer growing up- but we had a three room tent with a screened in porch, air mattresses, and a two burner camp stove. My husband grew up camping with only what he could carry on his back. His army experience as an adult just enhanced his minimalist nature. Between kids, work, pregnancies, illnesses... we were planning our first, long overdue family camping trip last month. Our kids are 2, 3, 7, and 11 years of age. I planned on getting a camp stove, bringing pots and pans, towels, seasonings, yada yada yada. That sure didn't fly. Trail mix and jerky for four days?!? That didn't fly with me either. Our compromise was a cast iron dutch oven and as much food as I could fit into a cooler. Challenge accepted! :-) I had a lot of fun planning some creative and well balanced meals The lid lifter was much shorter than I had anticipated, but that worked out well in terms of packing it into the van and carrying it into our campsite. I was a little hesitant to get that close to the fire while reaching out to lift a heavy cast iron lid off the pot. I had no problems and was able to use it to take the lid off and put it on without losing my balance. This lid lifter is simple, compact, and effective. I think it will last forever. I didn't give it 5 stars because it also wasn't out of this world. I have seen some with moving components to securely lock the lid onto it which I didn't find necessary, but would have been helpful. Overall, this is a good product for a good price that will last a long time.

Lid lifter for cast iron to pick up very hot lids. This will pick lids with charcoal on them if you are careful you won’t get them in your food.

Does what it should, but I just wish it was a bit longer. Either way, it does what it’s supposed to, and it’s a tool that will last pretty much a lifetime.

Description of the item is very misleading. Item is NOT made in the USA. Clearly states on the packaging that it is made in China. last time i checked C-H-I-N-A does not spell USA!! Item does what it's supposed to do but would have preferred to be a bit longer.

I bought this to lift the lids and cast iron pots out of a campfire or coals. Worked well. I like the end of it because the two short legs steady the lid when you open a pot lid. It is sturdy being made from wrought iron. It is painted black and I expect that paint to eventually fall off, but it appears to be suitable for hot conditions. I have used it twice with no chipping or paint smell. It is long enough to reach into an average sized campfire without risking burning one's hands. The ring on the end allows it to be hung up. I wouldn't take it backpacking due to the weight, but the length will fit easily into the cubby hole of an RV storage area. I am happy with my purchase.
