INSANE Suction Power, lightweight, with styling from the 1950's!
I have written like 2 reviews and usually don't bother - mostly because I hate 2 word reviews but don't have time to write complete reviews. But after one use I had to comment about this amazing vacuum. We had our home professionally cleaned again after moving in 2+ years ago when it was last cleaned professionally, I couldn't believe how much better our carpets looked - like when we moved in but I have not been able to replicate with my Dyson since. I was considering getting the carpet cleaned professionally because the Dyson has trouble picking up the carpet pile in high traffic areas unless I use a carpet rake first and follow the same vacuum pattern every time. I thought the house cleaner did something to the carpet but she only vacuumed with the commercial Oreck vacuums she said she swears by, and that I didn't need to clean my carpet. How could a vacuum that looks like the one my mom used be better than my awesome looking Dyson that I paid like $400 for? I hesitated but did my research and purchased the Oreck. It was pretty easy to assemble and had to endure my family laughing because they thought I'd purchased a 40 year old vacuum. But I tried it on a notoriously high traffic area that I usually have to vigorously rake to get the pile up with the Dyson. The Oreck pulled up the carpet pile without raking it first, AND while vacuuming in the opposite direction. I got all excited and vacuumed the whole house and FINALLY it looks like the day we moved in (the last time it was professionally cleaned). I will qualify this by saying I do have an older Dyson vacuum, maybe 10 years old or so....but we had wood floors put in not long after I bought it so it does NOT have many miles on it at all. I think the Oreck just took the Dyson to town, at half the cost and half the weight. The Oreck is light enough to use on stairs and I was able to do a flight in no time compared to wrestling the Dyson and the stair attachment up and down the stairs. I even used the Oreck on the couches and ottoman and it removed the cat hair really well. I will keep my Dyson for the attachments and pet hair turbine (for pillows and small areas), but that is not a knock on the Oreck because the simplicity of the design compared to the Dyson I think adds to its amazing effectiveness. Another great design feature of the Oreck is the low profile head and the handle that folds all the way to the floor. This give me access under desks, couches, and beds that the Dyson can't touch. It also transitions seamlessly between tile and carpet surfaces and is just as effective on hard floors as carpets without having to turn a knob to switch surfaces, like on most vacuums I've owned. Also, the extension cord is 40' long and plugs into a shorter cord on the vacuum and held together with a cord lock. This is a great concept that I would assume would allow you to switch to different length cords, based on your needs. I read reviews that the commercial models don't work on high pile carpet. I don't know the definition of "high pile", but I have tile floors, low pile rugs like what you'd find in hotel carpets, and carpet that I consider pretty standard - like 1/2" thick or so. The Oreck works equally well on all three surfaces. Of course the vacuum gives more resistance on the carpet, but for what I consider normal or standard carpet pile this vacuum works great. I'll get used to using a bag again. It's really old school along with the rest of the no frills design and function of this vacuum. But its a great trade-off for how my carpets look now, and although I don't anticipate having to replace any parts anytime soon with the extended life belt, it appears from my research that parts are easy to find and replace. Another benefit of the simple but incredibly functional design.

Beware of using the wrong bags (read this)
This is a no frills cleaner and is light weight to lift but don't let that fool you this thing is an animal of a beast on cleaning. It lifts the pile of the carpet and deep cleans better than any other vacuum I have ever used. After I used it four times the bag was about 1/2 full so I decided to put on a new bag. And that is where my problem started. When I bought this vacuum I also bought a pack of 25 extra bags. And not knowing that all oreck bags were not the same. The ones I ordered were blue and was labeled that they would fit my commercial vacuum. However the bag that came with the vacuum was light green when I changed it with one of the blue ones I instantly lost 1/2 of it's suction. I thought some thing had clogged the system after I checked every thing for a restriction and found nothing. That's when I dug deeper into the part number of the original green bag. What I found it was hypo allergenic and they sell them on Amazon For a pack of 25 their part number is PK800025DW.... (wright this number down!!!) Make sure they have DW on the end of their part number and they are light green!!! So I ordered a pack of them after I installed one of them the suction returned like it was when it was new. I will be returning those blue bags. Amazon should state what bags that work best with the vacuums instead of offering a discount on a pile of bags that doesn't work.... So save a headache and get the right bags to start with. Also I checked on the net and found several sites that sell any part you will ever need to keep your oreck vacuum repaired. This is a big plus if you are thinking of buying them to use in the lodging business or other commercial use.

Best vacuum I've had - and I have five cats and a dog
I'm sure it starts to sound clichรฉ, but I almost never write reviews. Something happened this past weekend that inspired me to write this one. I bought this vacuum in September 2019. I have five cats (four are long-haired) and one dog that sheds when nervous, when the wind blows, when a light is turned on... you get the idea. There's a lot of hair in my house. I have gone through several vacuums - bagless, bagged - they only last for so long (even if they're supposed to be for pet hair). I finally tried this one after looking at reviews. The Oreck is lightweight (a huge plus) and converts from hardwood to carpet really well. It doesn't have attachments, but I am not that great of a housekeeper where I take the time to do baseboards or corners, so this is fine for me. From day one, this vacuum has been great. It picks up pet hair really REALLY well. But, as I said, I don't write reviews, so didn't leave a positive comment any time during the past year. A few days back, as I was finishing the vacuuming, the vacuum started to make a strange noise, and then just stopped. Just turned off. While I was dismayed and disappointed, I wasn't really surprised. This is what happens to my vacuums - I just have to replace every so often because of the hard work they do for all the pet hair. We were going on vacation so I didn't have time to take a look and see if it could be fixed. I put it off until after vacation. Yesterday, I decided to tackle the vacuum. Plugged it in (just to see if it would work on its own) and it turned on, and then immediately shut off. I changed the bag, and it still did the same thing. I flipped it over to see if I needed to change the belt (honestly, I don't even know if this has a belt, but that was one of my thoughts), and I saw TROUBLESHOOTING on the stem of the vacuum. And I thought, wait - I don't have to go dig out the manual? I don't have to google what the problem might be? Oreck is putting troubleshooting RIGHT ON THE STEM OF THE VACUUM WHERE I CAN EASILY SEE A POTENTIAL PROBLEM AND FIX IT? One of the issues listed was a potential blockage, and troubleshooting explained to unscrew the O-rings, see if there was a blockage, clean it out, and reattach. Lo and behold, that was it. I cleaned it out, screwed the O-rings back on, plugged in, and was on my way. I guess, for me, more than anything, not only is this a strong, good vacuum, but the thinkers who engineered it thought ahead to provide troubleshooting tips right on the vacuum. That deserves notice and appreciation. So, thank you, Oreck.

I call it BIG RED. Old school simplicity that WORKS.
2 years later..... big red spits dirt everywhere...... Life must b over. Maybe I should remove another star. Original review.... I came to this vacuum after having a Dyson Petball Ultrasuck Deluxe, a "modern", bagless, new-tech vacuum with all kinds of bells and whistles that did nothing but annoy the heck out of me. It was heavy and ungainly, especially when using the hose attachment, and even what should be simple tasks (removing the hose without completely unwinding the cord, for example) were annoyingly complicated. It had great suction power though! Well, this Oreck is pretty much the opposite of that vacuum. It's almost completely old-school, other than the ergonomic handle, specially designed belt and automatic-shutoff system, but WOW-- this is the vacuum for me! I started calling it BIG RED (for obvious reasons) after my first use. I got mine on a Warehouse Deal (used like new), so I got about 20 bucks off for a new vacuum in a horrible looking box (the vacuum inside was perfect). So already, it's cheaper than the Dyson (or just about any Dyson). It uses bags (oh my gosh, how antiquated!) but replacements are cheap and available with advanced filtration (and honestly, I've had enough face-fulls of dust when emptying bagless vacuums to be over that). It also has a SUPER long cord (40 feet, I think) that is actually quite heavy compared to the vacuum (as others have noted), but when fully unwound, really adds nothing to the overall LIGHTNESS of the vacuum. The suction power is awesome-- especially on hard floors. Almost a bit much on carpets (if you have a thick, higher pile carpet, it is HARD to push). Since we have all hardwoods and a few area rugs, it's fine for us-- while the area rugs can be difficult to clean because of the difficult pushing, boy they sure are clean-clean-clean when finished. No hose tools-- no big deal. The edging and cornering abilities of this vacuum are great-- they pick up dust bunnies right next to a wall. The suction from it passes my biggest test-- a 1/2 inch deep channel between the laminate floor and our wood stove hearth where dirt and dust collect. Most vacs need their hose tool to get dirt out of here-- the Oreck does it on its own. It is also VERY light..... the vacuum itself only about 6-7 pounds, and another 3 for the cord (at most). This makes it VERY easy to maneuver and carry, and it also flattens out nicely to get underneath chairs and other objects (but only with about a 16 inch reach under). Pros: Great suction, simplicity, no bagless dust-face, light weight, amazing on hard floors, simple design, ergonomic handle. Cons: Hard to push on medium to high-pile carpet, no attachments, long cord can be ungainly if you don't need it, uses bags. For me, in my house, it's a great fit. However, I would NOT enjoy this vacuum if I had a whole lot of carpets in my house-- that would be a heck of a workout.

Long-lasting vac that's a workhorse. Light-weight.
Very lightweight cleaner that has enough power to clean up almost anything from your floors whether they are carpeted or hard surfaced. I've had 2 residential models and both have lasted for years. The last one broke right where the plastic portion of the handle tube joins the metal portion. My fault for trying to lift the vac up from the handle while it started to suck a throw rug up that I was standing on it. The plastic portion couldn't take it. The vac would still be in use if I could find an exact replacement. Anyway, I purchased this commercial model instead. It looks like the portion that broke on my old vac is metal instead of plastic. It also comes with a long-lasting belt. Functions the same as my older vac. This arrived right on time.

Oreck Red U2000RB-1 Awful Waste of Money
I own commercial cleaning company. We service dozens of facilities and use vacuums in all of them. We started using the Oreck XL2100RHS series (gray/blue) vacuums at least 4 years ago. They are lightweight at approx. 8 lbs, simple design, loud, but most are still in use. We sought to "upgrade" for large multi-location facilities and the Oreck U2000RB-1 seemed like a logical choice. These units are considerably heavier than the XL2100RHS, and have "electronics" located in the unit-to-floor housing that is supposed to provide automatic shutoff in the event a cord gets vacuumed in the base and wraps around the brush head. We purchased 8 of the U2000RB-1 at a premium price over the price of the XL2100RHS (all over $200 each). Each of the units has experienced a malfunction that has rendered the unit inoperable for a period until intervention occurred. The connector disconnecting from the power switch is typical and requires removal of 6 torx screws to reconnect, as well as a bit of skill to get all the wires re-seated in the handle wire recesses. But of greater consequence is the shorting-out of the circuit board or the motor, yes, the motor, that makes the vacuum useless even as a boat anchor. The power cable stress reliefs at the handle and connection to the base are a cheap plastic versus a rubber or composite material, and are destroyed allowing cord sheath to become frayed exposing the black/white power and green ground wires. I appreciate the kind words of the tech support people who are affiliated with the Oreck products, but not Oreck personnel. But if there was ever a class action lawsuit related to these machines I would be at the front of the line. Or if Oreck professes to not be aware of the extremely poor quality of these machines, I would challenge them on the merits and will bring my broken units to the meeting. If not for a mechanical repair skill set I have, we would simply be out of $1,600 plus downtime costs for these horrific machines. The U2000RB-1 are an embarrassment to the brand and the legacy of the brand. I will never again buy an Oreck vacuum. They should be ashamed at what I know has to be widespread disappointment with these units.

This is a dream vacuum!
Let me start off by saying, if you want hoses, attachments, bells and whistles, this vacuum is not for you. I bought this after struggling with the Hoover bagless canister vacuum for years. I've used this Oreck U2000RB1 twice since getting it, and the first thing my 14 yo son says, "hey dad where did you get that, the 1980's?" So this is not a fancy vacuum, it does look old fashioned, but no attachments, no "rolling ball", no clear canister to see your dirt. it just does the job a vacuum cleaner is supposed to do, clean. I was replacing a Hoover Wind tunnel "bagless" canister vacuum, which after 4-5 years of light use, kept shutting off abruptly in the middle of a job (overheating since the hoses clogged all the time), it stopped working even after cleaning out the hoses, and emptying the "bagless" hoover canister full of dirt and dust and hair meant standing outside, with a bag so you didn't just reintroduce all the dust back into your house that you just finished vacuuming up! In other words, the Hoover Wind tunnel was a painful, tortuous, piece of sh it, and I'll never buy Hoover again! I just wanted a good vacuum, with a bag, that did the job. I don't need to vacuum curtains, I don't care about the hoses, attachments, bells n whistles. After 5 years, I got tired of emptying the canister. I prefer the vacuum bags, like I used in the 80's-90's so the dirt actually stays in the bag and into the trash where it belongs. This Oreck bagged vacuum is light as a feather! Its a joy to push, its so light, its simple, constructed well. I did some research and already knew about Oreck's reputation for reliability. I wasn't persuaded by the cheaper Oreck XL "consumer" vacuum, after reading reviews and you tube videos, I think this U2000RB1 model was the best value, because it has all the basics, but comes with an Enduralife belt, which the lower priced models did not. I don't care about the 2-speed setting in the higher priced model, in fact that causes more problems. So far this U2000RB1 vacuum model is light to use, easy to push and pull, the handle is an ingenious (ergonomic) style. In fact, I plan to use the vacuum to clean the carpeted stairs, since it is so light! I ordered the green Oreck replacement bags, because its important not to go cheap with the bags. The key to keeping the strong suction power of this machine is to keep the air filtration through the bag, the cheaper bags do not do this. After 2 uses, this vacuum is a dream. Its has strong suction, it actually picks up lint and dirt from the carpet, it actually goes under the bed to get hair and dirt, in other words, does what it should. this model U2000RB1 is a bit more expensive, but if you don't mind not having the fancy attachments, it is worth. I hope it will last for years, as advertised.

My Oreck vs. Dyson Animal. Oreck wins. UPDATED at 7 months.
UPDATE: I've been using this vacuum for 7 months now and I'm still impressed. I'm about to throw out my first bag. Granted, the bag is VERY full and probably should have been taken out already, but the vacuum kept working as usual. I just realized it felt heavier, and it's because of the bag. So the bags hold a lot! The shocking thing to me is that NO hair is trapped in the brush roller. I have 4 dogs, two of which are golden retrievers. I also have two daughters with long hair. With my Dyson, it took no time at all for the brush roller to be a tangled mess full of hair, keeping it from working. Where's all the hair? In the very full bag, NOT tangled around the brush roller! No hair wound around it at all. Amazing. I took a photo but it won't upload. Regardless, this is fantastic and blows my mind. I have 4 dogs, and two are golden retrievers, so I NEED an amazing vacuum. I demoted my Dyson Animal Ball to the second floor in favor of the Oreck Commercial / red, and here's why: 1) Bag. I'm so over shoving my hand up in the Dyson canister to actually get everything out, making a mess. I wanted a bagged vacuum, and these bags hold a ton! When it's full I can just throw out the whole bag. After a couple of months of use I'm sure it will still be quite a while before the bag is full. 2) Brush roll. I wasn't sure what to expect with the brush roll on the Oreck, but it's WAY better than my Dyson. With 4 dogs as well as 2 long-haired daughters, the Dyson brush roll was constantly getting wrapped up in hair, making it ineffective and a pain to clean. I've been using the Oreck for a couple of months, basically every day, and the brush roll is still clean. That tells me the hair is going into the bag, not getting caught up in the roller. 3) Suction. The Dyson has good suction, but I think this is better. I feel like the carpet is getting clean, including dog hair. On dog hair I think the Oreck is superior. 4) Cord. The cord on the Oreck is super long. I can plug it in once and do all my carpeted areas on the main floor without moving the cord. While there are no attachments with the Oreck, I don't care. I have a stick vac I use when I need a hose. The Oreck does a decent job on the edges, just as good if not better than the Dyson. As needed, I can use my stick vac hose to clean the edges or brush dog hair from the edges before vacuuming my Oreck. As for volume, I see people saying the Oreck is super loud, but I don't really get that. I don't think it's that loud, and I feel like it's definitely LESS loud than my Dyson.
